an annual award for excellence in French-language television, presented by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television.
Type: 1. Origin — The ACCT created the Prix Gémeaux in 1987 after assuming responsibility for television awards. As of 2013, there are over 61 categories of awards, as well as some special awards given for various reasons, such as diversity and multiculturalism (see Prix Gémeaux reference).
Although the Gemini awards for English-language television were discontinued in 2012 and subsumed into the Canadian Screen Awards, the Prix Gémeaux are still awarded (see ACCT reference).
Outside of Canada, the prestigious award is widely recognized, but it is named and discussed much more frequently in Canada (see Chart 1).

Sara Morton has been appointed the new chief executive officer of the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television, which oversees the Genie Awards for film, Gemini Awards for Canadian television and Prix Gemeaux for French-Canadian TV.
2012
The first edition of the amalgamated [Gemini and Genie] awards show is slated to air on CBC on March 3, 2013, and will encompass English and French films, as well as English-language TV and digital media.
Because of the change, the programming currently eligible for the 2012 Gemini Awards will be part of the new awards show in March. The 2012 Gemeaux Awards will proceed as planned this Sept. 16 on Radio-Canada.
